At Gulf Islands Horse Association our mission is to improve, manage and promote the Mouat Regional Park community riding ring, guided by an unwavering commitment to help deepen ties among horse enthusiasts and advance the well being of island horses.
Hello fellow horse lovers! Thank you so much for supporting GIHA in 2025. Your membership and support are what has allowed us to move forward in our mission to improve and maintain the community riding ring in Mouat Park. A few of our 2025 accomplishments include:
As we move into the end of the year, we'd like to remind you to renew your membership which will still only cost you $25. One of the few island pleasures that isn't going up! Your membership is a great show of support for the horse community and our mission to restore the riding ring. It also gives you free access to the riding ring (with additional membership in Horse Council BC for insurance purposes).

Gulf Islands Horse Association members Sue Higgs, Patricia Lockie, Mary Ackenhausen, Lynn Bissett and Dan Lennox stand proudly next to a new eco-friendly electric lawn tractor purchased with funds donated by local donors to our Sport BC Fund, as well as a generous grant from Horse Council BC.
This purchase will make maintaining the arena's sand footing and the surrounding grassy areas much easier to achieve. Many thanks to Daniel Van Koughnett, Barry Dunster, Sue Higgs, Lucy Sliwowska, Dan Lennox, and countless other volunteers, contractors, and donors past and present for helping to repair and maintain the arena and surrounding infrastructure in past years. We look forward to many more happy moments of celebrating improvements to our community riding arena.
The necessity for dry, safe, and secure tractor storage prompted us to search for a reasonably priced structure of some sort when we purchased the tractor. Volunteers are now constructing a wonderful building that will store our tractor and other equipment, thanks to a kind donation of shed materials from the Barr family. We would especially want to thank Sue and Andy Higgs, Pam Brain, Dan Lennox, Zach Barr, and Jerry Sparshu for their tireless efforts in making this shed watertight and strong.
Our next project will be to create a water catchment system from the roofs of the shed and judges booth for sprinkling water onto the arena during dry days to keep the dust down.

We are a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to making a positive impact in our equestrian community.
Our long term dream is to build a cover over this community arena for use all year round!
